Earthworks: Smooth softens terrain; Flatten follows the first contact height; Ramp / bridge joins two clicked endpoints. Open Play for a fossil digsite. Volcanoes charge, erupt through open vents, and rupture when sealed.

I made this to carve through a hillside, walk into the hole, then fly away and come back. It started as a Surface Nets experiment; now it is a terrain sandbox you can build in and blow apart.

Volcano: choose 3 · Powers → Volcano, aim at land and click. It creates an editable cone and starts an eruption.

How it works

Surface Nets places a vertex in each cell crossed by the surface and connects neighbouring cells. Workers generate streamed chunks. The live brush updates nearby density samples and mesh buffers before rendering. The seed and edit journal rebuild your world when you return.

Algorithm: Mikola Lysenko’s smooth voxel terrain article. Rendering: Three.js. This build uses WebGL, not GPU-compute meshing.

Keep something you made

Save writes an editable world file. Controls → World → Save playable HTML puts your world and camera inside a standalone copy of the demo. Photo saves the scene without the interface.

Technical limits & license

Fixed vertical range, uniform chunk resolution, no fluid simulation. Water is visual; bombs use lightweight collision checks. Frame updates do not guarantee a particular frame rate.

New tools & activities

Forest plants on loaded ground; right mouse clears. Meteors fall onto the aimed point. Volcano pressure drives eruptions through open vents; sealed volcanoes rupture. Play offers a fossil excavation, a volcanic digsite, and the original core hunt. Wheel changes radius; Alt + wheel changes flight speed.

Save world includes planted trees, volcanic terrain and hunt progress. Saved volcanoes reopen dormant. Lava, falling trees and impact debris are visual effects, not fluid or rigid-body simulations.

Terrain Lab by Tront

Terrain Lab is a free terrain sandbox in the browser. The ground is a streamed signed-distance field meshed with Surface Nets, which means you can carve into it and add to it in the same frame with no seams: dig a pit, raise a ridge, smooth, flatten, bridge a gap, plant a forest, call a meteor, wake a volcano, or dig up the fossil buried in the digsite.

Everything is one HTML file with sixteen worker threads meshing chunks in the background, and it exports what you build. The same terrain technology powers BUTTLOADS 2, a first-person mining prototype.
